The winner of 'American Idol' has been announced.
The winner of "American Idol" has been announced.
Grace Kinstler, Willie Spence, and Chayce Beckham, the final three contestants, performed for the final time on Sunday's nailbiter.
"I can tell you that it's very close right now. You can't just assume that your favourite is safe "During the first hour of the Season 19 finale, host Ryan Seacrest made the announcement.
Beckham eventually won; his single "23," an autobiographical song about his battle with alcoholism, had topped Apple Music's country chart last week. Beckham said of the song on Sunday, "When you're sober for the first time, you've been performing for a long time, and you're going in, you're a broken person. I came out the other side a little bit better."
Previous contestants took the stage with Fallout Boy and Chaka Khan before Seacrest revealed Beckham had won.
Among the judges, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, Perry openly supported Kintsler, who received a standing ovation for her rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing." Regarding the performance, Byran stated, "I wanted to stand on the desk because a standard standing ovation was inappropriate. I craved more!"
Richie stated, "I'm just sitting here trying to figure out how you took a Whitney Houston song and raised it two or three octaves. You have outdone yourself, young lady."
However, it was up to the voters to decide who would be crowned the winner.
