Score and results for the United States vs. Mexico: Christian Pulisic's penalty kick goal gives the USMNT a dramatic victory in the CONCACAF Nations League final.

The matchup between the United States and Mexico never disappoints. And the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League final delivered on all fronts.

A penalty-kick goal by Christian Pulisic deep into extra time gave the Americans a thrilling 3-2 win over their archrivals on Sunday night. Pulisic, who wore the captain's armband for the game, was brought down on one of his trademark darting runs into the box. The referee went to the video monitor to review the play and awarded the late penalty kick, which Pulisic converted into the top corner.

But it took an incredible penalty-kick save from USA backup goalkeeper Ethan Horvath in the dying moments of the game to seal the deal. The referee went back to the monitor for a second time and awarded Mexico a penalty kick for a hand ball by Mark McKenzie. Mexico's Andres Guardado took the attempt with seconds remaining in extra time, only for Horvath to deny him at full stretch in a dramatic twist.

Horvath entered the game in the second half after starting goalkeeper Zack Steffen was forced to leave due to injury. Off the bench, he made several big saves, including a crucial penalty-kick save at the end of his heroic performance.

The USMNT came from behind twice during regulation to equalise before taking the lead for good in extra time.

Mexico appeared to have scored a game-winning goal in the 79th minute through substitute Diego Lainez, but the United States, which had been dominant on set pieces all night, tied it 2-2 three minutes later on a potent Weston McKennie header. Two video review incidents occurred during the extra session, as did a penalty-kick save, the ejection of Mexico manager Tata Martino, a pitch invasion, and incidents of fans throwing projectiles at players, one of which injured US forward Gio Reyna.

Horvath comes up with another stop in the 102nd minute of ET. This time off a stinging shot from Lozano, who is still dangerous after more than 100 minutes.

ET - 100th minute: SUBS - Carlos Salcedo replaces centre back Hector Moreno, presumably to assist with set pieces. Meanwhile, midfielder Andres Guardado replaces Hector Herrera, who was on the verge of being sent off.

ET - 94th minute: Hector Herrera, already on a yellow card, deserved another for a late, studs-up foul on Tim Weah. However, the referee spares him.

ET - 91st minute: Extra time has begun.

99th minute: USA 2, Mexico 2. Regulation: USA 2, Mexico 2. With a dropped ball, the game resumes. But we're going into overtime!

96th minute: A homophobic chant by Mexican national team fans causes a halt in play. The referee directs the teams to huddle in the centre circle.

Hector Herrera is given a yellow card in the 93rd minute for a late lunging challenge on the US goalkeeper. DeAndre Yedlin notices a yellow as the teams come together.

Horvath made another incredible stop in the 92nd minute, but it wouldn't have counted.

Ethan Horvath makes a huge save in the 90th minute! Lozano, who is on the left, curls the ball with his right foot, but Horvath intercepts it, resulting in a corner. Stoppage time of seven minutes!

Tactics for the United States are reset in the 88th minute. They play a 4-3-3 formation with Lletget-Adams-McKennie in midfield and Kellyn Acosta at left back.

Mark McKenzie was given a yellow card in the 86th minute for kicking Lozano. The US defender was slow to respond to that challenge.

83rd minute: The United States introduces Tyler Adams and Sebastian Lletget into the game, with extra time a real possibility at this point. (Unlike the semi-finals, this game will not go to penalties.)

82nd minute: And the United States responds with McKennie! He heads home a corner kick that was unnecessarily conceded by Chaka Rodriguez's clumsy move near the end line.

Lainez pulls it off in the 79th minute! Lozano feeds him the ball wide right seconds after coming on, and he shoots between three US defenders to put Mexico ahead.

Mexico with an attacking sub in the 78th minute. Uriel Antuna is replaced by Diego Lainez. Lainez has the ability to light up a room.

76th minute: The United States is dangerous on another corner kick. McKenzie has the header this time, but it's right at Ochoa.

Memo Ochoa makes an incredible save in the 71st minute! McKennie had another corner kick header on goal, but Ochoa was there to save it.

70th minute: Luis Romo misses a penalty kick in the box on the first opportunity after the restart of play. We'll have a significant amount of downtime coming up.

Steffen is being helped off the field in the 69th minute. Ethan Horvath enters the stage. Jordan Siebatcheu replaces Josh Sargent at centre forward for the USA.

66th minute: While the United States is still without a sub at GK, Mexico produces two of its own. In central midfield, Luis Romo replaces Charly Rodriguez. Tecatito Corona is replaced at forward by Henry Martin, who pushes Chucky Lozano wide.

Zack Steffen collapses to the ground after intercepting a through ball in the 65th minute. He doesn't appear to be able to continue. As a backup, Ethan Horvath getting ready to play.

62nd minute: Pulisic runs down the middle and feeds McKennie for a shot that the Mexico goalkeeper saves. Sargent is unable to capitalise on the rebound.

SUB - Timothy Weah comes on for Sergino Dest in the 60th minute. Nobody could have predicted that Dest would be the first player to be subbed out in this game. Weah will take over at left wingback for Dest.

58th minute: A corner kick from the United States reaches Dest on the left side, and he volleys the ball wide of the goal.

More danger from Mexico in the 57th minute. McKenzie makes a good decision to stand his ground against Tecatito Corona, who blasts a shot off the defender inside the box.

Mexico's Charly Rodriguez lofts a shot over the crossbar in the 56th minute, his first real attempt in recent minutes. To begin the second half, both teams are being cautious.

Kellyn Acosta is shown a yellow card in the 49th minute after a tough challenge results in a minor scuffle between the two teams.

46th min.: The second half is in progress. Neither side changes.

Halftime: United States 1, Mexico 1

Halftime: You have to imagine that Gregg Berhalter tries to use the break to understand how his captain can work. Christian Pulisic works a bit more centrally and gives Sergino Dest the left bank, which was also quiet. It's hard to imagine the U.S. winning without both.

Half-time: A gaffe by Mark McKenzie leads to a 2nd minute goal in Mexico and it looked like El Tri got another goal with Moreno's header. And then Reyna scored, just moments later. The nixed goal and the Reyna reverse showed how to turn in the first half, although Zack Steffen was supposed to stop before halfway through.

43rd min.: Zack Steffen's great save on Chucky Lozano and Herrera went out on the corner of his header. Just before halftime, great save by Steffen.

Uriel Antuna has been very active in the last five minutes, and his pass into the box finds Chucky, who can't connect cleanly on a first-time half-volley. 40th minute:

Sergino Dest and Christian Pulisic are having a quiet game in the 38th minute, but the United States is still tied with Mexico. After that first-minute goal, few would have guessed this outcome.

35th minute: McKennie gains possession of the ball in midfield and releases Reyna, whose fast cross into the area just misses Sargent.

McKenzie is caught on the ball again in the 34th minute, almost giving Mexico another chance.

33rd minute: Moreno sends another ball over the top for Chucky Lozano, but the pass is just a tad too long.

27th minute: A fantastic reaction from Gio Reyna's family in the stands:

Reyna equalises for the USA in the 27th minute! McKennie heads home a corner off the left post, and Reyna is waiting for him at the door. 1-1.

The USA's defence is poor in the 24th minute. Poor marking results in a Mexico corner kick and an open goal. On the next play, Moreno heads home a cross for a goal. However, after a video review, it was determined that it was offside.

21st minute: American fans boo because they want a penalty for a challenge on Gio Reyna in the box. The USMNT appears to be gaining ground.

19th minute: Pulisic and Reyna both get on the ball near the Mexico box, but El Tri defenders block and clear the danger.

18th minute: We're almost 20 minutes in and Pulisic and Reyna haven't played much..

14th minute: The USA makes a sloppy start. They had another turnover in their own end, and Zack Steffen just kicked the ball out of play on a ball intended for Yedlin.

12th minute: Hector Moreno, Mexico's centre back, sends a long ball into the box for Chucky Lozano, who almost gets to the ball. He'd have been in on goal. When Mexican players are knocking the ball around, Mexican fans start chanting "Ole."

10th minute: John Brooks receives an early yellow card for a behind-the-back foul on Chucky Lozano. He simply ran him over. The referee is attempting to set the tone.

7th minute: Mexico's early goal appears to have sapped some of the game's and the crowd's energy. Both teams are currently assessing each other.

4th minute: First shot for the United States. Josh Sargent blasts the ball into Mexico GK Ochoa from the right side of the box. It wasn't the cleanest shot.

3rd minute: McKenzie, who has been excellent for the United States in recent matches, was far too casual with that pass, and he was unprepared for Mexico's pressure.

Goal in the second minute! Tecatito Corona intercepts Mark McKenzie's pass inside the box and scores. Mexico wins 1-0.

Min 1: And we're away! 1st min. Rocking is the stage. It'll be a fun one.

9:30 p.m. ET: National Hymns Time. Mexico, then the United States.
