Morant and the Grizzlies beat the Warriors in overtime and advance to face the Jazz.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The city of San Francisco has declared a state of emergency. Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies came at Golden State with aggression, determination, and no fear, crashing the offensive glass to create extra chances, jumping in the passing lanes to force turnovers, and getting far more production from the bench.

The Grizzlies had an answer for every Stephen Curry dunk, and they're back in the playoffs.

Morant hit consecutive jumpers in the final 48 seconds of overtime to score 35 points, and Memphis advanced to the postseason for the first time in four years, defeating Curry and the Warriors 117-112 in a thrilling play-in game on Friday night.

“What a pivotal moment for the Grizzlies. It took a lot out of us all season. “It's just a proud moment,” said coach Taylor Jenkins. “We gave it everything we had to move forward, and I know we have more to give. What a fantastic game. It took extra time against a formidable opponent. There were numerous items that did not appear in the boxscore. We must continue to build and fight.”

Memphis earned the No. 8 seed and will meet top-seeded Utah in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs, which will be a best-of-seven series. The first game will take place in Salt Lake City on Sunday.

Golden State's Jordan Poole made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:50 remaining in overtime, but Xavier Tillman answered with a baseline 3 moments later. With 4 seconds left, Poole lost the ball out of bounds, allowing Morant to score, and then Poole made another unlikely 3 with 2 seconds left.

Morant shone on the main stage, and now it's time for him, Dillon Brooks, and the Grizzlies to take the next step.

“I know it's a huge achievement for all of us, but Dillon and I both know the work isn't done,” Morant said. “We're not trying to get to the playoffs only to be through. We must return to playing Utah, which has the best record in the league.”

Morant added six rebounds, six assists, and four steals to his total. He shot 14 for 29 with five 3-pointers as Memphis more than doubled its total from deep against Golden State, winning on the Warriors' home court just five days after losing 113-101 in the regular-season finale.

Curry, who became the Grizzlies' scoring champion on Sunday, finished with 39 points and six 3-pointers in front of an animated, roaring crowd of 7,505 in the biggest game yet at Chase Center's second year. He was responsible for seven of his team's 21 turnovers, while Draymond Green had six turnovers but also a triple-double with 11 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists.

“There were some pivotal turnovers that bit us a little bit, but I think the intentions were good and we were trying to make the right play, and sometimes it doesn't work out,” Curry said. “That is definitely something to nitpick about. It's a necessary part of the game to have solid possessions and get solid shots. I admired our bravado and our good intentions. … It didn't work out.”

Following a furious final minute-plus of regulation, these teams needed every tick of the clock in the extra period to determine who advanced and who went home for the offseason — and the NBA had to love it.

With 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Andrew Wiggins tied it with a layup off a beautiful pass from new star Poole, and Memphis committed a shot-clock violation on the other end.

Kyle Anderson converted two free throws with 54.9 seconds remaining after being fouled by Curry, who had just converted two free throws to tie the game at 1:12. Curry drove through the paint and was fouled six times by Jonas Valanciunas.

Then Curry let loose, as he had done all season in one of his best seasons yet at the age of 33.

Curry's three-point play with 9:40 left put Golden State up 80-78, and he followed it up with a spectacular three-pointer while falling backward. Morant followed up with a deep shot.

Memphis had to earn its way into the playoffs by winning a pair of play-in games.

The Grizzlies defeated San Antonio 100-96 at home on Wednesday night before returning to the Bay Area. On Wednesday, the Warriors were defeated 103-100 by LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center.

“Obviously a crushing way to go out, two straight gut punches,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “We felt like we had control of the game the other night and lost, and then we didn't have control of this one but could have won because we had the final shot in regulation. The ball simply did not fall our way.”

Golden State will be without Curry Splash Brother Klay Thompson for the second straight season, as he recovers from a torn right Achilles tendon suffered just before training camp and necessitated surgery.

The Warriors fell short of making the playoffs for the first time since reaching the NBA Finals five times in a row in 2019, losing in six games to Toronto.

Memphis ended a three-year playoff drought after making seven consecutive appearances from 2016-17, losing in the first round in the previous two trips and four of those seven overall.

The Warriors wanted to be focused from the start, anticipating another hot start by the Grizzlies, who delivered, making their first seven shots and three three-pointers to jump ahead 18-6.

Memphis took an early lead against Golden State last week, as well as against the Spurs. They closed it out this time against the Warriors.
