Leslie Grace has been identified as the new Batgirl for DC Comics.

The In the Heights breakout is making the move from New York to Gotham City.

It has just been announced that Leslie Grace from In the Height has been cast as Barbara Gordon in the upcoming DC film universe, marking a significant step forward in Warner Bros.' expansion of the Bat-wing of its many ambitions for the DC movieverse.

Grace will play Barbara Gordon in the standalone Batgirl movie, which will premiere exclusively on HBO Max and will star Isabella Merced, Zoe Deutch, and Haley Lu Richardson, according to Deadline. Grace was one of several names to emerge on a purported final list of options earlier this week, alongside Isabella Merced, Zoe Deutch, and Haley Lu Richardson. Bad Boys' Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will direct the film, which is based on a script written by Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson. Hodson was brought on board after disgraced director Joss Whedon backed out of the project, claiming he couldn't come up with a story for one of the most popular female heroes in DC Comics' roster.

Batgirl is only one of a slew of Bat-related films now in development at Warner Bros., thanks to the efforts of DC Comics. Of course, Matt Reeves' The Batman will introduce Robert Pattinson's new interpretation of the Dark Knight, but Andy Muschietti's standalone Flash film will also bring back both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton's interpretations of the legendary protector of Gotham City. In addition to directing the Amazon series The Tomorrow War, Chris McKay has long been tied to a Nightwing film, which he has yet to commit to making in the future, according to Deadline. Furthermore, HBO Max offerings such as the upcoming season of Titans—which will also star Savannah Welch as Barbara Gordon, albeit in her capacity as Oracle rather than Batgirl—as well as the impending Gotham PD spinoff centered in the milieu of Matt Reeves' Batman film are not ruled out.
